ethan ethan ethan. so quiet and shy, yet so clever and ridiculous.

he can wink. when he winks at you, you can't help but grin.

he can read. 4-1/2 years old and can read. we pulled him out of st. anne's in october and started homeschooling in november. i ordered a preschool program to use with him, but he doesn't really want anything to do with that. "i wanna do phonics, mom." phonics = anything that isaiah is doing in school. so after a few months of diligently following his preschool program, i scrapped most of it, signed him up for preschool once a week at church and started "for real" working on phonics and handwriting and math with him.

ethan is a big picture kind of guy. he understands concepts and patterns the first time you introduce it to him and, therefore, picks up on things easily. i think his learning style is a lot like mine, so that may also be why it's easier for me to teach him.

ethan is surprising. i remember when ethan used to be so naughty and we weren't sure what kind of boy he would become. now, i have a little boy who is asking for a little more responsibility, who asks me if he can say the morning offering all by himself or lead another decade of the rosary...and a little boy who will sing a christmas carol *by himself* in front of the family! for christmas, nani taught isaiah and ethan "o come all ye faithful" and they sang it for us, each with their own little solo parts. i completely melted, i was so proud of them, especially ethan. i could hardly get that kid to stand up with his class last year during the mother's day presentation, never mind actually sing. he has come so far.

he and owen have been spending a lot of time together. it's usually just the two of them while isaiah is doing school, and i think it has given ethan an opportunity to assert his authority as big brother. i think it has also allowed ethan to learn to be more nurturing towards his little brothers. sometimes he tries to beat isaiah to the bedroom when xavier wakes up crying from a nap. he helps owen go to the bathroom. on good days, he really tries to set a good example for the little ones, especially during Mass. i really like those days.

one of my favorite things about ethan is that his favorite thing to wear is a sleeveless shirt. he doesn't care what the weather is like outside, he likes to be sleeveless. when i let him pick out his clothes, you can almost bet he's coming downstairs wearing a de la salle basketball jersey (no shirt underneath) and some black twill pants. (don't you want to wear jeans instead, ethan? "but i like these black pants! they're so comfortable!") if those aren't clean, i swear he just picks out whatever is on top of the shirt pile and whatever is on top of the pants or shorts pile.
