my second-born is a scheming little guy. i've probably mentioned this before, but ethan doesn't always tell the truth. i'm not sure he truly understands what it means to tell a lie, but sooner or later he will not be able to claim ignorance.
we went to chicago over the weekend. we were in the car a lot. we'd be 10 minutes from our destination and isaiah would shout that "he had to go to the bathroom right now!" we'd call back for him to hold it and then put on a dvd so that he would be distracted and not think about having to go to the bathroom. bonus for ethan and owen, right? right.
we leave the hotel. the boys *just* used the bathroom before we left. "can we watch?" they ask this every time they get into my car. we tell them no. two minutes later, ethan says, "i have to go to the bathroom!" hmmm....he just went, so he probably doesn't really have to go. but he wants to watch tv and he knows that's what we did when isaiah had to go really bad last night. conclusion: he's lying about needing to go to the bathroom so he can watch tv.
he's a clever boy, but we didn't fall for it.
there's something about ethan that we can't quite figure out. actually, it's more that he's harder to read than the other boys. he's very independent and guarded. he doesn't usually like to cuddle or be hugged (unless he's sleepy and wants to put his hand in your armpit - yes, he still does that). i've noticed that he is most receptive when you look him in the eye when you're talking to him or playing with him. he likes to know that you aren't just blowing him off and that you are really paying attention to whatever it is that you are doing together. when he asks for something and you get it for him right away, it makes his day. (note to self: i need to remember to try not to keep him waiting too much.)
one of my favorite things about ethan right now is when he rhymes or changes the words to a song to make it funny. it rarely makes sense, but he is just so proud of himself when he comes up with a funny word to throw into a song. he laughs so hard at himself that you can't help but join in.
